THE LINDEN SPA, an exquisite 6000 sq ft Colonial Revival style building, will be opening soon at The Inn at Perry Cabin.
The name for the new spa was a natural! The moment Shoshana Weinberg, Spa Development Manager for Orient-Express Hotels, entered the long driveway leading to The Inn at Perry Cabin, the gracious row of linden trees 'spoke' to her. "I was born and raised in Maryland, so I'm familiar with the history of the linden tree and I've always loved it for its countless therapeutic uses. In fact, it was the healing properties of the linden and the many other herbs and plants in The Inn's gardens that influenced the botanical nature of our philosophy for the spa and its treatments."
The Tilia (linden tree) was brought here by early settlers from Europe, where the tree's leaves and blossoms have been used for centuries to ease anxiety, aid digestion, lower high blood pressure, improve circulation, and cure fever. Tea made from linden blossoms is still used today to treat insomnia and to relieve stress and tension. It is an ingredient in many modern cough and cold remedies.
Linden trees were also highly valued by settlers for their strong attraction to bees, which provided much-needed candewax as well as a sweet harvest of the most delicious honey. Lindens were so valued in ancient times that in some parts of Europe people were severely punished for cutting one down. This led to the superstition that bad luck befalls those who damage a linden! Visitors to The Inn at Perry Cabin simply love our Lindens for their beautiful silhouettes, heart-shaped leaves, and fragrant creamy blossoms.
Shoshana assures us that hand-gathered linden blossoms and leaves will be used in many of The Linden Spa's treatments, and will demonstrate our passionate commitment to the botanical art of wellness.
