Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum
The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum has the most comprehensive collection of artifacts, documents, and boats that bring to life the story of the Chesapeake Bay and the people who have lived around it. This national treasure has grown from a single house when established in 1965 to an 18-acre complex of restored buildings and new structures erected to display its comprehensive collection and the cultural heritage of the Bay.
Tours include exploration of nine exhibit buildings that house the world's largest collection of traditional wood Bay boats, a collection of sport and art decoys, illuminate the golden age of steamboats, and include a 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse. In addition, talks with historians, watermen and biologists, and hands-on demonstrations with boat builders in the Museum’s working boat yard, are offered.
After touring the unique exhibits of the Museum, groups can head on to the water for lunch aboard “Mr. Jim,” the Museum’s 52-foot’ boat. Tour the beautiful Miles River and other nearby waterways at a leisurely pace, as a museum guide brings to life the environmental and ecological history of the Chesapeake Bay and its role as America's most productive estuary. Become an active member of the crew handling lines and sails, and feel the tug of the wheel as the sails fill and the boat gathers speed.
Colonial History Tour
A mere 10-minute drive from St. Michaels in historic Easton, the seat of Talbot County, you'll find the Colonial History Tour. This tour includes visits to the Talbot County Historical Society for an evocative portrait of everyday life of the 18th and 19th centuries delivered via their historic houses and artifact collection of over 10,000 objects, a manuscript collection, impressive document archives and the award-winning Federal gardens.
Next is a visit to the Third Haven Meeting House, which was built in 1692 and is the oldest frame building dedicated to religious meetings in America. Finally, you'll board a private motor yacht for a one-hour journey to Oxford and a visit to the charming Oxford Museum before returning to St. Michaels.
Walking Tour of St.Michaels
Be entertained and educated with a walking tour of historic St. Michaels. This tour includes facts, fables, mysteries and scandals of the 'town that fooled the British' during the War of 1812.
Our private guide will transport your group back in time as we casually stroll the tree-covered side streets of this idyllic village. You will learn about the town’s early American inhabitants and explore many of the notable 18th and 19th century sites such as the Cannonball House, the Cottage, St. Mary’s Square and Museum, The Amelia Welby House, The Snuggery and Christ Episcopal Church.
And while the tour covers less than one mile, your group will welcome a traditional afternoon tea and the chance to chat at the end of the stroll. For the energetic traveler, period antiques, fine arts and unique gift shops are only a stone's throw away from Talbot Street (St. Michael's main street).
